Between the Piers set in Southsea, Hampshire is a moving piece about the all-important relationships that keep people going in otherwise grim situations as they struggle to live their lives. Like most seaside towns in the winter, everything is shuttered up and it looks poor, rundown and desolate. With no holidaymakers, everyone is trying to eke out a living the best way they can until the next season arrives.

Caz and her mother, Alice, live here and don’t get on - made worse since Caz’s dad died. Alice hates the care home she’s been forced into, and her grief only intensifies when she loses her treasured engagement ring on the beach.

​

Increasingly frustrated with her mother’s reluctance to move on, Caz promises to find the lost ring. And armed with a second-hand metal detector, she starts to search the beach every day. But, when a couple of teenagers invade her patch and threaten to scupper her goal, Caz doesn’t hesitate in scaring them off.

​

But as the days turn into months, Caz’s daily ritual with her Mum of sifting through the oddments found on the beach, starts to unearth something far deeper - and when she eventually finds the ring it raises a dilemma. Does she give it to her Mum and return to her old solitary life, or has she uncovered something far more valuable along the way?
